While there isn’t a magic phrase that gets you upgraded (despite what TikTok says 👀), there are a few things that genuinely improve your chances.
Here’s what actually works…
🛫 1. Join the Airline’s Loyalty Programme
It takes about 2 minutes and it’s completely free.
If an airline has to choose between upgrading someone who’s flown with them 20 times or someone they’ve never seen before…
…you can probably guess who they’re picking. 😅
😄 2. Be Nice!
Airport staff deal with delayed flights, lost luggage and people arguing about bag sizes…
Don’t be that person.
A smile and a bit of patience won’t guarantee an upgrade…
…but being rude almost guarantees you won’t get one. 🙃
👕 3. Dress Like You’re Going Somewhere Nice
No… you don’t need to wear a tuxedo. 🤵
But turning up in slippers, a vest and yesterday’s kebab stains probably isn’t helping.
Think smart casual.
You never know who’s making the upgrade decisions…

Birthday? 🎉

Listen carefully.

This isn’t technically “free”…
…but it’s one of the easiest ways to fly Business Class without paying Business Class prices.

Notice the word…
Politely.
Something like:
“I was just wondering if there were any upgrade opportunities today?”
Simple.
Friendly.
No begging.
No fake stories.
No “Do you know who I am?” energy. 😂

Let’s bust a few internet myths…
❌ Wearing a suit doesn’t automatically get you upgraded.
❌ Telling everyone it’s your honeymoon (when it’s clearly not).
❌ Arguing with staff.
❌ Flashing your Rolex.

Free upgrades are rare these days.
Airlines are much better at selling those premium seats before take-off.
But if you’re polite, flexible, loyal to the airline and travelling solo…
